This article explains how to morph between different sounds with Rounds in order to create dynamic, evolving textures.
You may consult the Komplete TruTorials videos Mighty Morphing for a quick overview of the example setup described in this article.
Morph Between Sounds
- Open a plug-in instance of Rounds in your host application.
- Open the Synth Engine Editing Panel for the top-left Cell of Block A by clicking the corresponding number in the Sound Bar (1, by default).
- Adjust the parameters in the Synth Engine Editing Panel to create your desired sound.
- Repeat this process for the rest of the cells in Block A, creating a different sound in each instance.
- Activate or deactivate individual Cells or Blocks by clicking on them in the Voice Programmer. When active, Cells and Blocks are lit. Ensure that all four Cells in Block A are activated.
- Activate Morph by clicking the Morph icon in the centre of Block A.
- Select the Rotate Reset Voice Mode from the bar at the top of the Rounds interface.
Now you can play notes to morph between sounds.
Morph in Time with your Project
- Enable morphing as shown above.
- Click the Hz icon in the Sound Bar to change the rate control to tempo-synced note values, adjustable between 0 and 1/32 in either direction.
- Adjust the Sound Bar’s QUANT knob to change the way that one sound transitions to the next. Low values give a smooth transition between sounds, while higher values result in sudden jumps.
Add more Blocks
You can also add more blocks in order to further enhance the character of the morphed sounds. When adding more Blocks, consider the following:
- Only active Blocks will produce sound. To activate or deactivate a block, click on the corresponding letter above it.
- Enable morphing within all active blocks by clicking the Morph icons in their centres. Note that morphing is only possible between Cells that use the same synthesis engine, e.g. analogue Cells may only morph into other analogue Cells. You may still create Blocks that contain both analogue and digital Cells, but transitions between the two will be immediate rather than gradual.
- Select a Voice Mode from the bar at the top of the Rounds interface. Choosing the dice icon will activate the random mode. With “MONOCHORD” selected on the right-hand side of the bar, this setting will route all incoming midi notes to one randomly selected Cell at a time.
Now you are able to play notes to morph between Cells while cycling between Blocks.
