Symptom
When trying to update the Kontrol MK3 firmware;
- the KSMK3 Updater shows "failed to boot into firmware update mode..."
- or the keyboard screen shows "Something went wrong. Please re-run the update on your computer"
- or the controller does not power back on after the update.
Troubleshooting Steps
Important: Do not let the computer go to sleep or unplug the device during the update process! If you are using a power supply, do not unplug it!
Disconnect any USB devices that are not needed for the firmware update (e.g. your audio interface, other audio controllers, etc.)
Close your web browser and all other applications before starting the updater.
If you are still experiencing issues. please try the following:
1. Many connection issues can be avoided by using a USB-C hub instead of connecting your keyboard directly to your computer. Make sure that the USB hub can transmit power and data.
If using a hub on Windows, deactivate the "USB selective suspend settings". You can find them here:
Click the Windows Start Button, type Edit power plan and hit enter.
Go to Change advanced power settings > USB settings > USB selective suspend settings
2. Try different USB ports on your computer (front / back, etc).
3. Use a USB-C power supply for the Power Only port, along with a USB-C cable connecting the keyboard’s HOST port to the computer (with USBC to A adapter if needed). The power supply should provide 5 V, 7.5 W or higher, 1.5 A or higher - you can use a regular USB-C charger that you might have along with your smartphone. The USB-C cable should support power delivery and data transfer functionality.
4. If you are on Windows, make sure that you have installed the latest Windows update:
Click the Windows Start button, and then go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
The latest Windows update installs the correct USB driver required for the error-free use of the Kontrol MK3. In order to check if the driver is missing on your Windows computer, please click the Windows Start Button, type "device manager" and hit enter.
In the Device Manager, expand the node for Universal Serial Bus devices and check if the DFU entry for your keyboard exists, e.g. "KONTROL S61 MK3 DFU":
If you can't find the DFU entry for your keyboard, your Windows system is missing the driver updates from one of the latest Windows updates.
5. If the firmware update still fails on Windows and you have access to a compatible Mac computer, please try to update on the Mac.
