Traktor X1 MK3 Overmapping Instructions

The article explains how to add Mixer FX control to Browse encoders in the Mixer mode, and can also be used as a reference for creating your own custom mappings.

You can also download the Mixer FX mapping found at the bottom of this article and import it directly into Traktor. Please refer to this link for detailed step-by-step instructions on importing controller mapping files.

Please note that the Browse encoders will retain their default function when in Effects mode.

Below you will find further explanation of the Mapping elements.

General Mapping Procedure

  1. Connect the X1 MK3 to your laptop via USB.
  2. Go to Traktor Settings > Controller Manager and select Traktor X1 MK3 as the Device.

  1. Select the function (control) you wish to map from the Add In... dropdown menu.

For instance, choose Browser > List > Select Up/Down:

  1. Under the Device Mapping, activate the Learn button, push/turn a button/knob you wish to map on your controller, and then deactivate Learn again.

  1. Apply additional settings in the Mapping Details:

 

This includes:

  • The assignment of the function to either a specific Deck or setting it as 'Global' (like, e.g., the Browse function).
  • The option to either check 'Override factory map,' which fully replaces the factory mapping with the new one, or leave it unchecked, allowing both the custom and factory maps to operate simultaneously.

Repeat steps 1-5 for each entry of the mapping.

Modifier

A modifier is a special type of control used to change the behavior of other controls within the software. Think of a modifier as a "shift" button on your keyboard; when you hold it down, the other keys do different things. 

Similarly, in Traktor, when a modifier is activated, it can change the function of other buttons, knobs, or sliders on your DJ controller. This allows you to expand the functionality of your equipment and customize your setup. You can program one button to perform multiple actions depending on which modifier is engaged.

In the Mixer FX mapping, Modifier #1 will be used to differentiate between the Mixer mode and the Effects mode of the device. To set it up, follow the steps:

  1. Click Add In... and select Modifire > Modifier #1.

  1. Under Device Mapping, activate the Learn button, push the Mode Button at the top of the controller, and then deactivate Learn again.

  1. Under Mapping Details, set the value to 0 in the Modifire Conditions and to 1 in the Button Options and adjust the rest of the details as follows:

  1. Repeat Step 1 by adding another row for Modifire #1 and set the Mapping Details as follows, including switching the value to 0 in the Button Options if the value is currently 1:

Ensure that the “Override factory map” option remains unchecked in both Modifier rows. This allows the Mode Button to continue toggling between Effect Mode and Mixer Mode while simultaneously switching Modifier #1 between 0 and 1.

You can check the correct functionality of Modifier #1 with the Modifier State monitor, which must show the value “0” in Effects Mode and the value “1” in Mixer Mode:

Mixer FX Adjust

The actual configuration for adjusting the Mixer FX (by turning the encoder) is specified in the following two rows:

  1. Press the Add In... button and choose Mixer > Mixer FX Adjust from the drop-down list.

  1. Under Device Mapping, activate the Learn button, turn the left Browser encoder, and then deactivate Learn again.

  1. Under Mapping Details, adjust the rest of the details as follows:

  1. Add another row of Mixer FX Adjust in the Adjustment Table by repeating Step 1.
  2. Under Device Mapping, activate the Learn button, turn the right Browser encoder, and then deactivate Learn again.
  3. Under Mapping Details, replicate the settings used for the left Browse encoder, and set the Assignment to Deck B:

Please note:

  • Both rows must be assigned to the Modifire condition M1 = 1 to be active only in the Mixer Mode.
  • Both rows must override the factory map to mute the underlying Browse function.
  • You can adjust the sensitivity of the encoder with the Rotary Sensitivity slider, depending on your preferences.

Mixer FX On/Off

The following two rows are configured to toggle the Mixer FX On/Off upon pressing the Browse Encoder:

  1. Press the Add In... button and choose Mixer > Mixer FX On from the drop-down list.
  2. Under Device Mapping, activate the Learn button, push the left Browser encoder, and then deactivate Learn again:

  1. Under Mapping Details, adjust the rest of the details as follows:

  1. Add another row of Mixer FX On in the Adjustment Table by repeating Step 1.
  2. Under Device Mapping, activate the Learn button, push the right Browser encoder, and then deactivate Learn again.
  3. Under Mapping Details, replicate the settings used for the left Browse encoder, and set the Assignment to Deck B:

Please note:

  • Both rows must be assigned to the Modifire condition M1 = 1 to be active only in the Mixer Mode.
  • Both rows must override the factory map to mute the underlying Browse function.

Mixer FX Reset

You can also always reset the Mixer FX amount to the center position each time it is pressed. This functionality is mapped in the following two rows:

Resetting a value is a selectable property of the Adjust functions when assigned to an Encoder push or Button on your controller.

  1. Press the Add In... button and choose Mixer > Mixer FX Adjust from the drop-down list.
  2. Under Device Mapping, activate the Learn button, push the right Browser encoder, and then deactivate Learn again.
  3. Under Mapping Details, adjust the rest of the details as follows:

  1. Repeat the steps for the right Encoder and set the Assigment to Deck B.

Please note: 

  • The Modifier condition and the Override options must be adjusted like for the other Mixer FX mapping rows.

Restoring default Browser Encoder behavior

In the Mixer FX mapping, we overrode the factory behavior of the Browser encoder. To maintain a clean configuration and ensure that future mappings do not interfere, we can now manually restore this behavior through additional mapping rows. These rows activate when the value of Modifier #1 is '0,' which corresponds to the Effects Mode.

This can be done via the following four mapping rows:

Select Up/Down (Browser List) - the function is used to navigate through your track collection.

  1. Press the Add In... button and choose Browser > List > Select Up/Down from the drop-down list.
  2. Under Device Mapping, activate the Learn button, turn the left Browser encoder, and then deactivate Learn again.
  3. Under Mapping Details, adjust the rest of the details as follows:

  1. Repeat these 3 steps for the right Encoder.

Load Selected (Deck Common) - the function loads the currently highlighted track from your browser list into a specific deck.

  1. Press the Add In... button and choose Deck Common > Load Selected from the drop-down list.
  2. Under Device Mapping, activate the Learn button, push the left Browser encoder, and then deactivate Learn again.
  3. Under Mapping Details, adjust the rest of the details as follows, including assigning the function to Deck A:

  1. Repeat the 3 steps for the right Encoder and assign the function to Deck B in the Mapping Details.

If you prefer not to enter the mapping manually, you can conveniently load the Mixer FX mapping file provided at the bottom of this article.

After importing, you should see all 12 mapping rows displayed in the Assignment Table of the X1 MK3 device, as illustrated at the top.
