The Morpher in Molekular allows you to dramatically alter a sound manually or via modulation. The Morpher's control area consists of the Base in its center and four offsets (A, B, C, D) in the corners. You can save different sets of parameter values in Molekular to the Base and the offsets and morph between them either by clicking and dragging your mouse or by modulating the angle and radius controls, located on each side of the control area. The parameters available for morphing include all modulators as well as the DSPs (if activated, see below).
To assign and modulate the Morpher parameters follow the steps below. The Reaktor preset used as an example in this article is available for download at the bottom of the page.
Important Note: The preset available at the bottom of the page can ONLY be opened in the FULL versions of Reaktor 5 and Molekular. It is not possible to load presets in Reaktor Player of the DEMO version of Molekular. To open the preset go to the Reaktor 5 menu and select File > Open Preset. Then navigate to the respective file (with the suffix .nrkt) on your hard drive and click Choose.
Activating the DSPs for the Morpher
- Click on the Morpher button to show the Morpher status of the four DSPs.
- To activate a DSP for morphing, set the switch for the respective unit to ON. In this example, we are going to assign parameters from ReSonitarium, a resonator effect available in DSP 1. Therefore, we set DSP 1 to ON.
- Exit assignment mode by clicking the Morpher button again.
Assigning the Morph Base and Offsets
- Click Save to enter morph saving mode. Save will start blinking to indicate morph saving mode.
- Save the current state of Molekular as the morph Base by clicking Base. The morph Base represents the center of the Morpher's control area.
Note: Remember, in order to save its parameter states to the Morpher, the respective DSP needs to be activated (see above).
- To save one of the offsets, enter morph saving mode again by clicking Save. Save will start blinking to indicate morph saving mode.
- Adjust the parameter(s) you want to morph accordingly. In this example, we will adjust the Pitch parameter from ReSonitarium.
- To save the current parameter values as an offset, click one of the four letters (A, B, C, or D). In this example we will select offset A. The offset is now saved and is represented visually by the corresponding letter.
- To save offsets for the remaining slots, repeat the above steps for the remaining offsets (B to D).
- Click and drag the cursor from one point to another to morph between the Base and its offsets. The sound morphs from one saved state to another and the morphing is visually represented by the movement of the display.
Clearing an Offset or the Base
- To remove an offset enter morph clearing mode by clicking Clear. Clear will start blinking to indicate morph clearing mode.
- To remove a single offset, click the corresponding letter. In the example below we will remove offset A.
- To remove the Base and clear all saved morph assignments, click Base.
Removing Morph Destinations
If you have assigned a parameter to the Morpher but are unhappy with the result, you can remove parameters one by one.
- Go to the morph clearing mode by clicking Clear.
- Double-click the corresponding parameter labels you want to clear. In the example below we will remove the morph settings for the parameters FB and Reso by double-clicking their labels.
Morph Modulation: Motion
The morphing section can also be modulated to "run on its own" rather than dragging the cursor with your mouse.
- Select any modulation source by clicking the corresponding tab and number in the modulation section.
- To enter assignment mode, click the ASSIGN button. Modulation depth sliders will appear next to the angle and radius controls.
Note: For more information on how to make a modulation assignment in Molekular, refer to this article.
- Click and drag the bipolar sliders in order to increase the modulation amount. In this example, we will assign LFO 1 the angle control.
- Exit assignment mode by clicking the ASSIGN button again.
- To start morphing, click the Motion button.
The Morpher moves automatically between the offsets in accordance with the assigned modulation sources. Just like the angle control, you can assign modulation sources to the radius control to achieve more complex motions of the Morpher.
