This article explains how to route MIDI from KOMPLETE KONTROL to a separate Instrument Track or MIDI Track in Pro Tools 12. This is useful if you want to use the KOMPLETE KONTROL Smart Play functions (Scale and Arp) to control third-party plug-ins loaded in Pro Tools or external hardware devices. You will learn how to send MIDI from the KOMPLETE KONTROL plug-in to:
- another Instrument Track, in order to control a third-party plug-in.
- another MIDI Track, in order to control an external hardware device.
Routing MIDI from the KOMPLETE KONTROL to Another Instrument Track
- Load KOMPLETE KONTROL in an Instrument Track in Pro Tools. Please read this article from our Knowledge Base in order to learn how to insert a NI plug-in in Pro Tools.
- Choose Track > New in the Pro Tools menu bar to create a new Instrument Track which will receive MIDI from KOMPLETE KONTROL.
- In the New Tracks dialog, choose Stereo and Instrument Track. Once done, press the Create button to create the new Instrument Track.
- Click the first insert slot and navigate to the plug-in you want to load in the drop-down menu. In this example, we select the third party plug-in Diva (Stereo).
- Make sure the Instruments field is visible in the edit window. To do so, choose View > Edit Window Views > Instruments in the menu bar.
- In the Instrument Track, click the MIDI Input selector (which is by default set to All).
- In the MIDI Input selector drop-down menu, select Komplete Kontrol MIDI Out > all channels.
- Finally make sure that the Record Enable button is activated for both the track where KOMPLETE KONTROL is loaded and the one where the third-party plug-in is loaded. If record enable is not activated on the track where KOMPLETE KONTROL is loaded, the KOMPLETE KONTROL plug-in will not react to the KOMPLETE KONTROL S-Series hardware. If record enable is not activated for the track where the third-party plug-in is loaded, it will not react to the MIDI sent from KOMPLETE KONTROL. Hold down the shift button on your computer's keyboard to record enable several tracks at once.
The MIDI events generated by KOMPLETE KONTROL will now control the plug-in loaded in the Instrument Track we have created.
