Note: If you are using Mac OS X 10.10 (or higher), please refer to this article instead.
This article provides important information if you intend to move components of your Native Instruments software to another location on your computer on Mac OS X 10.9. While it is possible to move some components of your NI software (e.g. sample libraries, factory content, etc.) after the original installation, it is important that other components (e.g. applications, preference files) remain in place. This article provides information on these different components:
- Applications
- Preferences and Settings
- Plug-ins
- Content
1. Applications
It is not recommended to move your Native Instruments software applications after installation, as this can cause various problems including failed updates.
The default location for NI applications is:
Mac HD > Applications > Native Instruments > *Product Name* (folder):
2. Preferences and Settings
Native Instruments installers write preference and settings files in various system and user folders. Do not move or delete any of these files unless you are following specific instructions from the Knowledge Base or Native Instruments Support technicians to resolve an issue.
3. Plug-ins
Computers running OS X have dedicated system folders for VST, AU, AAX or RTAS plug-ins. Do not move your plug-in files to another location as your host sequencer will not be able to detect them.
4. Content
If you do not define a custom library path during the installation of your NI product, the library folders will be installed in these default locations:
- Macintosh HD > Users > Shared
It is safe to move your Native Instruments sample libraries (i.e. for KONTAKT, MASCHINE) to another hard drive. In some cases, performance can even be improved if you have an extra hard drive devoted to library storage as shown below.
The relocation process differs depending on the library. Find more information about moving specific Native Instruments libraries below:
4.1 KONTAKT 5
Refer to this article for information on how to relocate a KONTAKT-based library (eg. DAMAGE, ABBEY ROAD 60s DRUMMER etc.) as well as the KONTAKT Factory Library after moving it to another location on your system.

Refer to this article for information on how to relocate a MASCHINE-based library or MASCHINE Expansions after moving the folder to another location on your system. Refer to this this article for information on how to share MASCHINE projects between two computers.
4.3 Powered by REAKTOR Instruments and Effects (e.g. THE MOUTH, THE FINGER, PRISM or RAZOR)
When moving your REAKTOR content products to another location, it is necessary to first uninstall the content, then reinstall it to the new destination. Read this article to learn how to reinstall a NI product.
4.4 REAKTOR Factory Content
To change the REAKTOR 5 / 6 Factory Library path to a new directory, click on the Directories tab within the REAKTOR Preferences. Click on the Folder icon and browse to the new library location on your hard disc.
4.5 REAKTOR Blocks
When moving your REAKTOR Blocks to another location on a computer, it is necessary to first uninstall it, then reinstall it to the new destination.
4.6 Powered by GUITAR RIG
When moving your Powered by GUITAR RIG product (REFLEKTOR, TRAKTOR'S12, RAMMFIRE) to another location on a computer, it is necessary to first uninstall it, then reinstall it to the new destination.
