In order to automate a Massive X parameter in your DAW, you must first assign that parameter to one of the 16 available macro slots. The Macro controls can then be automated in your DAW or configured to be controlled by an external MIDI controller.
Parameter Assignment
You can assign a single parameter or a multiple parameter to a macro control.
The macro controls can take over the full range of a single parameter. For example, you can use Macro 10 to control the Amp Pan.
Drag and drop the Macro 10 from the Header onto the Amp Pan parameter.
If you wish to assign another parameter to that same macro, simply repeat the steps above.
By playing a note and turning Macro 10 you can control the Pan.
Recording Automation
Once the macro control has been assigned to one or more parameters, you will now be able to record the automation in your DAW.
In the below example in Ableton, we overdubbed the automation by enabling the MIDI Arrangement Overdub and Automation Arm. Then by pressing the record button in Ableton, we could record our Massive X automation.
Please consult your DAW's documentation on recording automation for more information.
Assigning parameters to a MIDI Controller
Once you have assigned a parameter to a macro control as per the steps above, you can then assign that macro to a control of an external MIDI device. The steps will vary from DAW to DAW. The below example shows how to do this with Ableton Live.
- Click the button to unfold the device parameters:
- Press the MIDI Map Mode Switch in the top right corner of Ableton:
- Click on the parameter you wish to assign and move the knob or slider of your controller that you want to correspond to that parameter. Since we have already assigned the Pan to Macro 10, we will choose that parameter.
- Press the MIDI Map Mode Switch to close the MIDI assign table.
You will now be able to control the desired parameter with your MIDI controller.
