This article explains how to trigger and record Maschine Drum Kits in Studio One using your Maschine controller.
Note: If you wish to trigger melodic instrument sounds with MIDI notes, please follow this article instead.

Studio One MIDI Device Settings
- For this exercise, we recommend starting from a new/empty Studio One project (i.e. New Song).
- Connect your Maschine controller and go to Studio One Preferences > External Devices.
- Click ADD, and use the pop-up window to select New Keyboard.
- To the right of this window, select your Maschine Controller in both the Receive From and Send To drop-menus. In this example, Maschine Plus Virtual is selected in both fields.
- Click OK to close the Add Device and Preferences windows.

Configuring MIDI Input on Maschine Kits
This chapter explains how to set up Maschine Kits (i.e. whole Groups) to receive MIDI note input across all 16 sound slots (i.e. Pads).
- Insert Maschine as a Studio One Instrument plug-in.
- Open the Maschine 2 plug-in window and load a Kit onto Maschine Group A1.
Note: Make sure +PATTERNS is disabled in the Maschine Groups Browser.
- Once a Kit is loaded, click Channel > Group > Input > MIDI to access the MIDI ROUTINGS for the loaded Kit.
- For Key Mode choose Manual, for Source choose Host, and select a MIDI Channel. We recommend for this exercise, MIDI Channel 1.
Note: If you're using more Kits on additional Groups, repeat steps 3 & 4 above and choose the next available MIDI Channel for each additional Group.
- Switch your Maschine controller to MIDI mode. You can find the button combination for your device in this article.
Click to expand the next chapter below, to configure your Maschine Pads.
Transposing Maschine Pads to the Correct Octave
While your Maschine controller is in MIDI mode, press the Group button marked with the letter C. This will set the Root Note of the first pad to MIDI note C1.
Note: On a Maschine Mikro (MK1 / MK2 / MK3), hold down the GROUP button and press the Maschine Pad marked with the letter C (i.e. Pad 15).
Now the Maschine Pads are transposed into the correct note-octave on the MIDI keymap, where the first pad (1) corresponds with the Root Note C1 (as shown below). All 16 Pads in MIDI mode will now trigger each of the Kit sounds loaded in the Group.

Recording Maschine Kits on Studio One Tracks
If using just one Kit on a single Maschine Group, you can record-enable the Studio One Instrument Track containing Maschine. This allows you to play and sequence the Kit sounds using your Maschine Pads in MIDI mode.
If using more Kits on additional Maschine Groups, please follow the instructions below.
- Right-click the Studio One track area, and select Add Tracks. Create a track for each Kit (Group) loaded into Maschine.
- In the Add Tracks menu, set Type to Instrument and set the Count to however many additional Kits (Groups) are loaded in Maschine (see below).
- In the Output section, enable Existing Instrument, choose Maschine 2 from the drop-down menu, and select the MIDI Channel associated with the next Maschine Kit (Group) that is loaded. Click OK.
Note: In this example, our first Kit is loaded in Maschine Group A1 and an additional Kit is loaded in Maschine Group B1. These are set to receive note input over the respective MIDI Channels that were assigned (i.e. MIDI Channels 1 & 2).
- Arm the Studio One Instrument Track you want to record. You can now play and sequence the Kit sounds on this track with your Maschine Pads. You can repeat this process for any additional Kits you may have loaded in Maschine.
