Using the KONTAKT Database

In this article, we explain how to use the KONTAKT Database browser to access library content as well as your own instrument preset files.

Note: The Database feature is available in KONTAKT 6 and earlier versions.

Adding Your Custom Folders

You can add folders and hard drives containing your own KONTAKT presets. Follow the steps below to add your own KONTAKT files to the Database.

Note: Factory libraries are automatically added to the KONTAKT Database during installation.

  1. In the KONTAKT Browser, click the Database tab and select Database Options.

  2. In the Options > Database window, click Add to browse for the folder containing your custom instrument presets. In this example, we will add a folder containing edited preset (.nki) files named 'My KONTAKT Presets'.

  3. Click Update to allow the Database to scan the folder that was added. This process may take several minutes to complete.
  4. Type the name of the folder that was added to the KONTAKT Database in step 2, and its contents will appear in the list of results.

    Note: The folder named 'My KONTAKT Presets' is used as an example. You would type the name of your custom presets folder here.

Tagging Your Custom Presets

You can tag your presets to quickly find them in the KONTAKT Database. In this chapter, we will explain how to add further attribute tags to your custom presets.

  1. Click to highlight the preset you wish to tag.

    Note: To select multiple entries, hold the SHIFT key and click the presets.

  2. Click Edit at the bottom of the Database Browser.

  3. While in Edit mode, use the upper section of the Database Browser to select the desired Type of Attribute Class tags. Entries are marked with a dot when selected. In this example, we add the Synth Misc and Classic Synth tags to the selected preset.

  4. Use the Comment section to enter a description. In this example, we will type the name of the folder containing our custom presets.

  5. Click Save, once you have finished assigning the tags.
  6. Use the upper section of the Database Browser to select the Attribute tags assigned to your preset.
  7. Check the results list in the lower half of the browser to find the presets matching the selected tags. In this example, the Comment helps to identify the custom preset that was tagged.

    Note: If the Comment column is not visible, you can right-click (or CTRL+Click) the column header to activate the Comment list.
