How to Keep Komplete Kontrol 2.9 and Komplete Kontrol 3 on Your System

macOS

Symptom

After updating to Komplete Kontrol 3.0 (or higher) on macOS, the standalone version of Komplete Kontrol 2 is removed.

Cause

The installer replaces the standalone version of Komplete Kontrol 2 with Komplete Kontrol 3.

Solution

  1. Download and install Komplete Kontrol 2.9.6 (macOS).
  2. Open the following folder:
    Mac HD > Applications > Native Instruments > Komplete Kontrol
  3. Create a new folder and name it Komplete Kontrol 2_9.
  4. Copy and paste the Komplete Kontrol app into this new folder. You should now see the app in both folders like this:

  5. Open Native Access > Updates and install the Komplete Kontrol update:

  6. Open the following folder:
    Mac HD > Applications > Native Instruments > Komplete Kontrol > Komplete Kontrol 2_9
  7. Hold the control button on your Mac keyboard and click the Komplete Kontrol app. Select Open from the menu:

Now you have access to the Komplete Kontrol standalone versions 2.9.6 and 3.x.x.

Windows

Symptom

After updating to Komplete Kontrol 3.0 (or higher) on a Windows system, the VST2 plug-in and the standalone version of Komplete Kontrol 2 are removed.

Cause

Komplete Kontrol 3.0 is only available as a VST3 plug-in. The Windows installer removes the VST2 plug-in and replaces the standalone version of Komplete Kontrol 2 with 3 during the installation.

Solution

We highly recommend using the VST3 version of Komplete Kontrol, since the VST2 plug-in will be phased out in the coming months.

If you want to keep the VST2 plug-in for now, create a backup of the plug-in and copy it back to your VST2 folder after the installation of Komplete Kontrol 3.0 (or higher). With the following steps you also keep the two standalone versions Komplete Kontrol 2.9.6 and 3.x.x:

  1. Download and install Komplete Kontrol 2.9.6 (Windows).
  2. When asked if you want to downgrade your software, confirm with OK.
  3. Open the following folder:
    C: > Program Files > Native Instruments > Komplete Kontrol
  4. Right-click Komplete Kontrol.exe and select Copy:

  5. Right-click in the empty space below Komplete Kontrol.exe and select Paste:

  6. Right-click the new entry Komplete Kontrol - Copy.exe and select Rename:

  7. Rename it to Komplete Kontrol 2_9.exe. Now you have 2 exe-files:
    - Komplete Kontrol 2_9.exe
    - Komplete Kontrol.exe (this is version 3)

  8. Open your VST2 plug-in folder and copy the file Komplete Kontrol.dll to a different location, e.g. your Documents folder or desktop.

  9. Open the following folder and copy the file ScanPluginsApp_x64.exe to a different location:
    C: > Program Files > Common Files > Native Instruments > Komplete Kontrol

  10. Open Native Access > Updates and install the Komplete Kontrol update.

  11. After the update, copy the Komplete Kontrol.dll back to your VST2 folder.
  12. Finally, copy the file ScanPluginsApp_x64.exe back to the original location:
    C: > Program Files > Common Files > Native Instruments > Komplete Kontrol

Now you can load the VST2 or VST3 version in your DAW. You also have access to the standalone versions 2.9.6 and 3.x.x.

Please note that some DAWs (like Cubase, Nuendo, Studio One, etc.) will always prioritize the VST3 version and do not allow using the VST2 and VST3 version of a plug-in simultaneously. Please contact the DAW manufacturer for further information.
