First of all, thank you all for taking the time to post your feedback here. We really want to hear your input, and it’s already making a huge positive impact on how we make future decisions. Based on your feedback we’ve begun re-prioritizing some plans, and tweaking some assumptions.
Let’s see if I can help clarify some of the major points people have registered here:
Thoughts on Traktor DJ 2 at launch:
Our goal with TDJ2 was to create a new DJ application that would appeal to users of Traktor DJ 1, and attract a whole new group of users as well. Unfortunately, we didn’t finish as many features as we wanted before our release date. Our intention from here on out is to keep developing features with input from the community to help steer our priority focus.
Traktor DJ 1 vs 2
Judging from the feedback here, it’s clear we made some mistakes around gracefully transitioning our audience from Traktor DJ 1 to 2. The way we removed TDJ1 from the App Store and then left out some key features from DJ1 clearly alienated some users, and we hear your frustration. We should have prioritized more features that were present in Traktor DJ 1 before launch. These include beat grid edit tools, mix recording, and older hardware support amongst others… (see my comments below about our plans regarding these features.)
In hindsight we probably should have kept TDJ1 in the store a little longer, or at least given people a warning before removing it. If you own it already, it’s easy to redownload it from the App Store any time, just follow these instructions: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201272#apps
What’s the plan for TDJ2 in the future?
We plan to roll out a bunch of great free features over the next months and years, with input from user feedback. At some point in the future, we also want to offer a suite of additional “premium” features that will allow you to enhance your DJing experience if you so wish. We don’t have a solid rollout timeline in place yet, but we expect the premium features will come sometime next year.
We plan to release our first free feature update this summer, and after digesting your feedback here, we’ve decided to focus on some beat grid editing tools and additional controller support first. Mix recording is currently planned to be part of the premium package which will come next year. We hope to arrive at a price point that is fair to everyone, and please feel free to comment below with your thoughts on the subject.
As much as we’d all love you to rush out and buy shiny new S2’s to use with TDJ2, we really want to support the hardware you already own. We didn’t have time to add as much hardware support as we wanted before release, but we hope to add more legacy controller support as soon as possible. Which leads me to:
So, this is a tricky one. Unfortunately, the S4mk3 does not have an MFI chip inside, which is required by Apple to support iOS devices. We hope Apple moves away from MFI requirements in the future, but as it stands now, the S4mk3 will not work with an iPad. We’re hoping to add support on Desktop sometime in the future, but we have not committed to a time frame yet.
Where is Spotify? Where is [insert streaming service here]?
We would love to support as many streaming services as possible. We’re talking with all the major players, but some services are still not available for integration with DJ software yet. In the case of Spotify, we hope to add them as soon as they are able to support additional DJ software integrations beyond their current exclusive partnerships.
What about iPhone support?
We don’t have any plans to develop an iPhone version at this time, but never say never.
From all of us here on Team Traktor DJ 2 we wanted to thank you again and let you know we’re listening. We hope you will enjoy what we have planned for the future, and happy mixing!
