Sound Creation: Generate, Mutate and Randomize
Generate
Generate turns your audio files into real, tweakable Massive XL presets. You don't need any synthesis knowledge to turn a reference sound into a playable starting patch.
How it works: Drag an audio file into the Generate panel. Massive XL analyses up to 4 seconds of audio and gives you four variations of that sound as presets, and it runs locally on your computer.
- Waveform and trimming: Choose which 4-second section of your file is used.
- Stem separation: Isolate a part of a mixed file (for example, the bass) before generating.
- Match x Imagine: Sets how closely the result follows the source audio.
- Variant Diversity: Sets how different the generated variants are from each other.
- Variants: Audition several generated versions and keep the one you like.
- Character Knobs: Adjust the character of the result, and see how it’s affecting your patch in real time.
Tip: Loud input files or files with heavy low end can produce loud results. Lower your output volume before generating, or turn down the input sample.
Mutate and Randomize
Mutator and Randomizer give you two quick ways to create new variations of a patch.
Mutator: Inspired by Absynth, the Mutator changes all your modules, such as the filter type, oscillators, noise tables, inserts, effects, and amp. It borrows these modules from other presets in your library.
The more presets you have, the more varied your results.
Randomizer: The Randomizer keeps the module types and randomizes their parameter values instead. For example, it changes your filter's cutoff frequency, but doesn't switch the filter from Asimov to SVF.
How it works: Load any preset, including one you made with Preset Generator, or simply the INIT sound. Then mutate or randomize the whole patch or individual modules, or lock the modules you want to keep. This keeps results usable and lets you explore variations in seconds.
Oscillators, wavetables, effects and expression
Custom user wavetables
Bring your own wavetables into Massive XL! Drag and drop audio files onto the oscillator, or import a whole folder of samples. All your material should appear under the User folder in your Oscillator menu.
More wavetables and noisetables
More than 100 new wavetables are included: vintage PPG tables, acoustic instruments, original Massive tables, and tables sampled from analog hardware.
More than 100 new noisetables add texture for percussive, breathy, and atmospheric sounds.
New effects: Raum, Replika Shimmer, and Tape Wobble
Three Native Instruments effects are now built into the Effects slots X, Y, and Z. You get space, shimmer, and tape-style movement inside the synth, without routing to separate plug-ins.
- Raum: Reverb with Airy, Grounded, and Cosmic modes.
- Replika Shimmer: Shimmer delay.
- Tape Wobble: Tape-style modulation and saturation.
Tip: Key Trackers and the Voice Randomizer work per voice, so they don't modulate the Stereo FX. Use LFOs, Envelopes, or Macros to modulate these effects.
Morpher Freeze mode
Freeze is a new Morpher playback mode on the Play page. Instead of following the whole path, the Morpher locks to its current position each time you play a note.
- Each note can land on a different point in the path, so your sound moves naturally without drawing automation.
- Variation comes from how and when you play, so Freeze works on stage as well as in the studio.
Poly Aftertouch
Massive XL now supports poly aftertouch. If your hardware sends poly pressure, existing Aftertouch (AT) assignments switch to poly pressure automatically. All existing presets with AT assigned benefit right away, with no extra setup.
Important Note: Poly aftertouch has no effect on some parameters. Poly aftertouch only works in the polyphonic, per-voice part of Massive XL. It has no effect in the following cases:
- When the preset is set to mono.
- On the Stereo FX, which processes all voices together.
- On Performers, which always run in mono.
Poly aftertouch requires poly aftertouch hardware.
Presets & Libraries
New Factory Library
Massive XL comes with a factory library of 1,000 presets that shows off what the new engine can do. Your existing Massive X presets and Expansions load in Massive XL too.
After you install Massive XL, make sure you go to Native Access and install the Massive XL Factory Library.
Custom User Banks
Sort your saved presets into your own banks, by project, genre, client, or live set, instead of one long list.
How it works:
- In the browser, select one or more of your presets.
- Open the metadata editing panel.
- Enter a name in the Bank field and click Apply.
Your new bank appears in the bank selection pane on the left.
Module Subpresets
Skip the blank canvas with saveable starting points for individual modules.
- Filters, Insert FX and Stereo FX: Load and save presets for every filter and effect type. Many include factory presets.
- Performer and Keytracker: Load and save curve presets, with a set of factory curves included.
Interface & Workflow
Animated Modulators
Watch modulation happen in real time. Every assigned modulator moves as a shape in the middle bar, and every knob shows how strongly it's being modulated.
Contextual Modulation and Global Modulation Reveal
Modulators now appear only when you need them. Hover over a modulated parameter to see what's driving it. To see every assigned modulator at once, hover over the new Global Modulation Reveal element in the middle bar.
Draggable envelope handles
Shape the Amp and Modulation envelopes directly by dragging their handles and curve segments; no knobs needed.
Single Oscillator view
Switch the Oscillator module between the familiar dual-oscillator panel and a new single-oscillator layout. The single view includes a waterfall display of every frame in the selected wavetable, so you can see its content at a glance.
Undo/Redo history
Experiment without worry. Most edits are tracked, and you can use the Undo/Redo buttons or jump to any earlier state from the history list in the header.
Info pane
Click the info icon in the header to open Context Help. Hover over any parameter or control and a short explanation appears at the bottom of the window.
Reworked themes
The dark and light themes have been rebuilt with better contrast and readability, and now also apply to the browser and Play page. The flat style is now a setting rather than a separate theme. You can also move the Macro bar to the top, middle, or bottom, and choose window zoom levels from 50% to 200%.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use my Massive X presets and Expansions in Massive XL?
Yes. Massive XL is fully compatible with all Massive X presets and Expansions.
Is there a demo mode in Massive XL?
Yes! Simply download the free Massive XL Player. Once launched, you can enable Demo Mode either from the welcome screen or via the Settings menu in the header.
Does Massive XL Player include Preset Generator and the Mutator?
No. Massive XL Player plays its included presets and presets from any Massive X Expansion you own. You can still use the Morpher and Animator to shape the movement of your sound.
Will Massive XL be part of the Native Instruments 360 subscription?
Massive XL will not be included when it first launches. We're excited about both Massive XL and the future of Native Instruments 360, and we're continually exploring opportunities to expand the subscription experience over time.
While we can't confirm future catalog additions or timelines, please be assured we will notify subscribers of any updates as they become available.
Massive XL doesn't appear in Maschine or Komplete Kontrol on Windows. What can I do?
Update Maschine and Komplete Kontrol to the latest version. Massive XL then shows up in the plug-in browser.
My DAW put Massive XL on its plug-in blocklist. What can I do?
Make sure you have the latest Massive XL version installed. Then open your DAW's plug-in manager, select Massive XL, and reactivate or rescan it.
Does Massive XL run in standalone mode?
No, Massive XL currently runs as a plug-in only.
How was Generate trained?
Generate was trained entirely on internal data. Each training sample is a pair: a Massive XL patch, with all its parameter values and ranges, and the audio that patch produces. This means our datasets are fully internal and ethically sourced.
Generate is not meant to be a destination, but rather a faster starting point for your own unique sound signature.
Known Issues
Massive XL doesn't appear in Maschine or Komplete Kontrol on Windows
Massive XL may not show up in the plug-in browser of Maschine or Komplete Kontrol on Windows, even though it is installed correctly and loads in your DAW. To fix this, update Maschine and Komplete Kontrol to the latest version.
Some Mutator or Randomizer results are silent or very quiet
A mutated or randomized sound can end up too quiet to hear. This is usually caused by a long attack time or by low send or mix values in the effects. Shorten the attack or raise the effect send and mix levels, or mutate again.
Preset Generator sliders can't be undone
Changes to the Match x Imagine, and Variant Diversity sliders in the Generate panel aren't added to the undo history. To go back, set the sliders manually.
Window problems on a second monitor in Reaper and Komplete Kontrol
Reaper and Komplete Kontrol place plug-ins inside their own window container. After using Fit to Screen, Massive XL doesn't take that container into account, so the window may not move properly to a second monitor.
In Reaper, the window becomes too wide for the screen; in Komplete Kontrol, it becomes too tall. To avoid this, choose a fixed zoom level, such as 100%, instead of Fit to Screen.
